Draws for the 2010 HG Masters: 31 March, 7.30pm
Last year we launched the new HG Singles Masters and it was a great success with a fantastic finals day full of sunshine, BBQ and beer. This year, we are aiming to make this competition even better! Despite the bad weather, a lot of players kept playing during the winter with several matches being hard fought and won on 3rd set tie-breaks! The second edition of the HG Masters will be starting on 1 April with the round-robin stage, with semifinals to be played on Saturday 17 April and Finals on Sunday 18 April. Rules can be download from here and the order of play from here. The draws for the group stage will take place on Wednesday 31 March, from 7.30pm. We will be watching Arsenal-Barcelona as well, so what better occasion to come down to the bar and have a drink with us? Everyone (ladder players and non-players) welcome.

The Hallam Grange Masters
The closing date for entry into the first Hallam Grange "Masters" Event will be the 31/03/09. Positions at 8pm on the 31st will determine who is invited to take place in the Event. The two groups, Red and Gold, will be headed by the players in first (Red) and second (Gold) positions at that time. The remaining 6 positions 3 and 4, 5 and 6 and 7 and 8 will each be drawn to place them in either Red or Gold groups. If any of the top eight players at 8pm do not wish to participate in the event, the player(s) in the next highest positions in the ladder at that time will be invited. It would be appreciated if you are in contention for a final eight place that you let Fabio or Rick know by 30/03/2009 if you are unable or do not wish to participate. The Draw will be conducted in the Club Bar at 8.30pm on 31/03/2009. Participation rules and event calendar can be downloaded from here.

Hallam Grange Masters
Following a great suggestion by Joe Brian, it has been decided to run the "Hallam Grange Masters" tournament in April. The top 8 players as recorded on the Singles Ladder at 31/03/2009 will be invited to take part. Initially, there will be two groups of 4 players playing on a round robin basis. The top two in each group will progress to semi-finals and then normal knock out rules will apply. The aim will be to provide play by dates for each round of matches to ensure the tournament is completed in the gap between the Winter and Summer seasons. To qualify for the masters players will need to be participating in the ladder (not resting) for the whole months of February and March and the positions on 31/03/2009 will determine group positions for the round robin stage. See poster for other details. More information on dates to follow...

May Bank Holiday American Tournament
What a difference the sun makes. The Bank Holiday Tournament was well supported by the members with 4 courts going all afternoon. The tennis was competitive and, hopefully, enjoyed by all. Carol and Leo were the eventual Champions of this years first American Tournament. There were many close matches and plenty of good tennis from all of the combatents. Thanks to Deborah for organising the event and a big thank you to those who came and played. Hope to see you at the next one. If you missed this one, come and try the next one - we may even manage a barby!!! (I promise there will not be a quiz!)

Hallam Grange win the Cup
Hallam Grange C beat Beauchief A in a entertaining final of the Winter League Cup. Nicola Westley and Chris Gilmour produced two sets of near faultless tennis to win the ladies 6-0,6-2. Wilf and Ben Jessop had to dig deep after dropping the first set 3-6, but came back strongly to take the final two sets 7-5, 6-1. Wilf and Chris proved too strong for the Beauchief first mixed pair winning 6-2,6-2. Ben and Nicola fought hard in the second mixed rubber before going down to a third set tie-break. Congatulations to the C Team squad which also starred Ros Westley, Lorraine Lodge, Chris Bagnall, Dom Jessop and Andy Green. More silverware to polish!!!!!

Hallam Grange make Final
Mixed results from last weekends semi finals. The "A" Team fought gamely but were beaten by a strong Wheatley Hills team in the plate semi final. The"C" Team produced an excellent performance to soundly beat Bradfield and will now feature in Saturday afternoons final at Grove LTC. They will play Beauchief in the final. Good luck to Nicky, Chris, Ben and Wilf.

Pastures New for Vicky and Jeff
On Friday 08/02/08, Vicky and Jeff flew to Portugal to start their new life in the Algarve. Both have been valued members of the club, and both have contributed greatly over the past years. Hallam Grange will miss Vicky and Jeff and we hope that whilst they have exciting times ahead of them, they will be able to visit us on occasions - maybe for a spot of Snow, Wind or Rain to break up the boredom of Blue skies and Sun.

A great night out at the Dogs!!
If you didn't make it to the Dog Night at Owlerton Stadium last night, you missed a good evening! There were 43 of us - 33 adults, 10 youngsters - which means that the event made £165 for the club! To my knowledge, only JP (John Pannell), Ben (Jessop) and Sophie (Stockwell) came out in profit, but what the heck - the Pie & Mushy Peas were brilliant!! Sophie had a great night all round, because, not only did her "lucky trap 2" pay dividends most of the night - she got to present the prize to the winning dog in the "Hallam Grange Tennis Club Stakes". If you don't believe me, look under Photo Gallery / Social / Dogs Night. We may just do it again sometime...

S&D DINNER DANCE
Attention HG Members!
The Sheffield & District's annual Dinner Dance and presentation evening is on FRIDAY NOVEMBER 10th ... and this year we're picking up some silverware!! Two championships and 2 other promotions - it's been a successful season for Hallam Grange! As tickets are always in hot demand, I jumped in with an order of 25 for the club. A notice and sign-up sheet has been posted on the club noticeboard for a couple of weeks now and 16 have so far signed up: Jessops, etc (6); Bryants (2); Pannells (2); Manbys (2); Wilkinsons (2); Burke (1); Robinson (1). There is no chance of us getting any more tickets - and I will have to notify the organisers very soon if we are not going to claim our full allocation. This is our big social outing of the year, as our club does not hold its own celebration evening. If you are interested in joining us, contact Wilf (07833 187420) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, whilst there are still a few tickets left.

MURDER POSTPONED / BAR QUIZ!!
Unfortunately, we have decided that, due to a disappointing response, the Murder Mystery evening scheduled for next Friday, Sept 29th, should be postponed. Apologies to those that had already signed up, but it was felt that staging it later in the year might encourage greater numbers to take part. So the new date is FRIDAY DECEMBER 1st, starting at 7:30pm. Please put the date in your diaries and KEEP IT FREE! A new notice will go up at the club in a few weeks time. Oh, and by-the-way : Friday Sept 29th has now been down-scaled to a HG BAR QUIZ!! Start time is 8:30 for 9pm, which gives you a bit more breathing space at the end of the week! I hope that AT LEAST all those that signed up for the original Murder Mystery will be there. Everyone welcome - just turn up!!

GOING UP, GOING UP, GOING UP...
With a convincing 6-3 victory at Beauchief B in a winner-takes-all encounter on the last day of the mens' season, Hallam Grange first team gained promotion to Division 1 of the S&D League! Unfortunately, we shan't meet our old foes Fulwood there next season, as they're passing us on the way down... There could still be a double celebration as Hallam Grange Ladies' first team also kept their promotion challenge alive with a 5-4 win at Bamford B.

Tomorrow is D-Day for Hallam Grange Mens 1st team, who visit Beauchief "B" for a winner-takes-all promotion decider. If we win, we leapfrog them and will play in the top division next Summer. If you've nothing better to do, then why not come and support us as we do battle on the astroturf!
